After the Event Insurance: What Is it?

As part of a personal injury claim, you might need to take out an after the event insurance policy. This is a typical part of the claims process. But if you’ve never made a claim before, you might have wondered what it is and what it will cover.

We’ve put together this guide to answer any questions you may have about after the event insurance. Keep reading to find out more or get in touch with our friendly advisors for tailored advice.

What is after the event insurance?

After the event insurance is exactly what it sounds like. It’s an insurance policy that you take out after something has happened.

These policies will generally be needed in No Win No Fee personal injury claims. But they may also be recommended in other situations, such as during the conveyancing process.

When you first speak to a solicitor, they’ll explain the policy to you and let you know when it should be taken out. They’ll also answer any questions you may have about the process, so you’ll feel confident going forward.

If your No Win No Fee claim is successful, you won’t have to pay for the policy until the claim is concluded. The cost of the policy will then be taken from your final compensation amount. This means you won’t actually have to pay anything out of your own pocket.

What does after the event insurance cover?

After the event insurance is designed to cover the various costs associated with making a claim. This could include:

  • Court fees
  • Medical reports
  • The other side’s legal expenses

These costs are called disbursements and are typically paid for by your solicitor, who will then recover the costs from the insurance policy.

But if your case was unsuccessful and you hadn’t taken out after the event insurance, you would most likely be left to pay these expenses yourself.

What is the cost of after the event insurance?

There is no set amount to pay for an after the event insurance policy, as the cost will usually depend on how likely your claim is to be successful.

If you haven’t taken out a policy early in the claims process, it could become more expensive to do so later on. In general, the later a policy is purchased, the more expensive it will be. And if legal expenses have already been paid for, the cost of the policy could run higher.

It’s worthing noting, though, that you won’t have to pay your solicitor upfront. Your solicitor will ensure the policy is paid for, which means you don’t have to think about it.

Who will organise the insurance policy?

Organising an after the event insurance policy is not something you’ll need to worry about. Your solicitor will handle this side of the claims process for you.

Before starting the claims process, your solicitor will let you know exactly what costs you’ll face. But it’s important to remember that if your case isn’t successful, you won’t pay anything. That means you won’t have to pay for the insurance policy if your claim is unsuccessful.
